I have to confess that I was inspired to blog this picture of Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof by my daughter and her family. Seems as though this movie is a favorite for them and for me. It has been a long time since I have seen the movie but it was a classic. Not sure what it means to be a classic but for me it is one that I will not forget and for which I found much to remember. I like the songs. "If I was a rich man", "Sunrise, Sunset" and all of them for that matter. Thesetwo songs seemed to capture the man, Tevye, for me. It is based on Tevye, the milkman, and his five daughters. The story centers his attempts to maintain his family and religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. He must cope with both the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters—each daughter's choice of husband moves progressively further away from established customs—and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village. What a story, but then it isn't that far from today, or maybe it is really symbolic of the lives we all live really.
Lyrics,
Sunrise, Sunset
(Tevye)
(Tevye)
Is this the little girl I carried?
Is this the little boy at play?
(Golde)
I don't remember growing older
When did they?
(Tevye)
When did she get to be a beauty?
When did he get to be so tall?
(Golde)
Wasn't it yesterday
When they were small?
(Men)
Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunrise
Swiftly flow the days
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers
Blossoming even as we gaze
(Women)
Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears
(Tevye)
What words of wisdom can I give them?
How can I help to ease their way?
